As of March 2021, all HGVs over 12T, no matter what DVS star rating they are, need a Safety Permit to enter Greater London or risk being fined up to £550/dayThis legislation is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year!

The application for Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Phase 2 opens on 24th June 2024. If you submit your DVS Safety Permit application before then, you are applying for DVS Phase 1, meaning you have to reapply before your permit expires. 

Getting a DVS Safety Permit for your 12T+ HGVs couldn't be any easier. Just follow these 3 simple steps and start your DVS Safety Permit application today. 

STEP 1

Visit TfL's portal and check your HGV star rating. Alternatively, email your vehicle registration number(s) to [email protected].

Install a DVS Progressive Safe System (if your HGV DVS star rating is less than three)

STEP 3

Once you have completed the previous 2 steps, head back over to the TfL's portal and start the DVS application for your HGV.

STEP 1 - Check your Direct Vision Standard (DVS) star rating

If you are applying for more than five vehicles, you can upload the details using their CSV template.

ii.) Confirm the make and model of the HGV

Make sure all the info of your vehicle is correct.

iii.) Your HGV star rating is displayed

The star rating of your vehicle appears once all the details are confirmed and matched. In some cases, the star rating of your vehicle might be missing from the TfL's database. If this happens, you can request it directly from your vehicle manufacturer. You can find their contact details at the bottom of the page. 

STEP 2 - Install a DVS Progressive Safe System (PSS)

If your HGV's DVS star rating is less than 3-star, then you must fit a DVS Progressive Safe System before applying for the Safety Permit.

STEP 3 - Submit your Direct Vision Standard (DVS) Application

Go to the DVS TfL portal for their easy-to-use online form. Once you have confirmed the star rating and installed a DVS Progressive Safe System (PSS) then you will have to do the following:

i.) Fill in the Operator contact details

Once you have filled in the information, click next and follow the instructions.

ii.) Upload photographic evidence

Photos will need to show the front and rear left side of the vehicle, with the vehicle's number plate and DVS Progressive Safe System (for 0-2 stars rated HGVs only) clearly visible, in order to pass the criteria of proof.

iii.) Submit your application

Once everything is submitted, you will hear back from TfL in the next 30 days.
